Wake up and experience the coffee

Making the most of every moment

I love coffee. Some might say I am obsessed with it. The fact that there is a coffee roaster and a supply of green coffee beans in my garage might lead to that conclusion. The fact that our kitchen looks a lot like a chemistry lab also points to obsession. The number of cookie-cutter coffee shops we pass on our way to get great coffee several miles from our home adds fuel to the obsession fire.

When I meet someone, I can find a way to talk about coffee. If I need to discuss business with a client, it usually happens over a cup of coffee. The day begins with Panama Boquete brewed in a Chemex brewer and ends with a Costa Rica Decaf brewed in a Clever brewer. I roast my beans just shy of the second crack, allow them to season for 48 hours, store them in glass jars, grind them with a burr grinder, and brew with water at 200 degrees. Coffee is an experience, not a beverage!

What would happen if we approached our days with the same intentionality that I approach coffee? We would wake each day with excitement about the opportunities before us. We would savor the moments we have with friends, family, and strangers. Our eyes would light up as we talk about those things that make us tick. Each day would be more than hours on the clock; it would be an experience.

When we begin to discover our whys, the days begin differently. Each day has a flavor that is unique. We become wide-eyed with excitement and take advantage of every opportunity to share our joy for living with anyone who will listen. We pay attention to the details because they bring out the flavor in life. You can love your life as much as you love your morning coffee. You just need to live your why! Think about it!

Terry, a topic that is close to my heart.  I had not thot about loving my life as much as I love my coffee; in some ways I would not even think it was possible.  Sometimes I get a twinge of guilt when I think that I love coffee as much as I love The Lord.  I like to get up each day and give my time over to God and am happy to do this . . . . with a good cup of coffee.

I admire the amount of work and loving care you go to from raw bean to hot fresh cup, and yes I might see you as slightly obsessed, but it shows you what lengths you are willing to go to for something you really love.  Maybe its a good gauge for the rest of your life.

Thanks, Meg. Isn’t it funny how much trouble we go to for great coffee and how carelessly we often approach our lives? I’m OK with being obsessed with coffee; I just want to have that same care for things that really matter to God!
